Dh says yes you can. Some codes are free, some you have to pay for although it's only a minimal amount for what the code will do for you.

www.dvdcodes.net is where we got ours from.

good luck with your search & unlocking your Dvd player.

Or if you've not bought the player yet, just get one that's already a multi-regional player.  Then it's all set up for you; ready to play!

Shugga is right, you can get loads of codes online for free.  Dh is an AV tech and he knows a few ins and outs as well.  We ended up paying a few pounds for a huge list someone was offering on ebay.  It has loads and loads on there!  THe biggest reason I wanted the codes is because I wanted a portable DVD player that could play both U.S. and British DVD's

Thats exactly why we got the codes, cause my Best Friend before I moved over to the UK bought me a portable Polaroid DVD player. Dh loves our portable DVD player cause he can take it into work with him. an on a slow day he can watch 1 of his British dvd's at work 1 of the perk's he says about owning your own business.  ::)  :P

I just went through the process of buying a new multi-regional DVD player and found that most of the machines were multi-region capable, but they didn't play the DVD's right away and still needed me to imput the code to change the region to 0 (free region).  (I've heard that sometimes there are stubborn American DVD's that don't accept the programming in 0 and have to be turned to region 1, so I kept my code written down.)  What really surprised me was that none of the DVD player manuals had instructions on how to access the regions or enter the code, which makes me wonder if the DVD player we replaced was already a multi-region one too.  Luckily several of the independent reviewers on Amazon gave instructions on how to make it work.  I didn't know about that website.  I didn't find any machines that were ready to play my American DVD's out of the box, but luckily the code worked just like the online instructions said it should and I'm happy as a clam to be able to watch my movies now! :)

They usually don't.  The whole point of the region codes was to enable the studios to release DVDs in different parts of the world at different times, and right from the start the manufacturers were supposed to release players which would only play the "right" DVD for the country of sale.   Even though the "secret" has long been out and region codes have really been rendered quite pointless, it seems there's still an element of trying to protect the system, at least superficially.

I bought a multi-region player on Amazon and it turned out we needed a code, though nothing in the description said you needed a code, and nothing that came with it explained how to make the player multi-region. But we did a search online and quickly found the info we needed -- which is to say, you won't have a problem! What you could do is search for the info on how to unlock the region for a given player before you buy it just to put your mind at ease.
