Hackney to Hampstead - How to move?!
« on: February 17, 2007, 03:50:05 PM »
Bless my dear husband, he's agreed to move out of his beloved Hackney into my darling Hampstead.  We've found a tiny place we both love right on the heath and are really excited.  But now we're looking around trying to figure out how to do it.  We don't have very much stuff, but more than simply suitcases.  Has anyone else moved flat within London?  Are minicabs the best option - are they ok with boxes and moving things or is that not done?  Black cabs?  Public transport back and forth with all we can carry?  Renting a car?  I'm really hoping to hear what people have done and how it worked because we really have no idea what to do... Thanks so much!
And I'm thinkin' if you were mine,
I'd never let you go,
And that would be just beautiful I know
Beautiful to take a chance,
And if you fall, you fall
And I'm thinkin'
I wouldn't mind at all . . . (Billie Holiday)

I moved fairly early after getting here and only had suitcases, a couple of bookshelves and a few boxes. I hauled the suitcases on the bus and then had a friend with a car help me with the remainder.

Could you rent a car for the day?

Man With Van!

You'll find adverts in your local paper, and in Loot, and on bulletin boards in the supermarket, etc.

Yep I second the man and van idea, they usually charge about £40 per hour.  Some of them even have websites now and you can also find them advertising places like Gumtree.

Thanks so much for the advice!
I'd never heard of the man and van idea and it worked perfectly!
Just Gumtree-d it, called them up, and there you go - moved.
Thanks again :)
