Help! My Internet connection won't work!
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:27:58 PM »
I've borrowed my husband's computer to post this. Tonight, as I was already online, my connection went out (I use a laptop and connect wirelessly to a Sky wireless modem). It said it couldn't find my IP address. I tried and tried to fix it, and now the list of available networks doesn't even show my sky account anymore! And I can't seem to add it back on! I've been messing with this for an hour and am getting nowhere. Any ideas?

I still can't connect, but I did get my network list back. So the option is there to connect, it just won't. It's not a problem with the actual Internet connection, as my husband can still connect, it's something to do with how my computer is reading the wireless address. Help!

call sky, if they're the ones that do your connection

Sounds to me like the modem needs a reset. Not being rude but have you tried to take the plug out of the modem, wait ten seconds then put it back and see what happens? That's a common problem and usually fixes everything. Mine does that sometimes and that's what works.

Good luck

Exactly what I was going to suggest.

This happened with me at our old house with Sky a lot.  Always turned it off and it came back on in a few minutes.

So far here (Cross fingers) there have been no problems.

Good luck!

I didn't have Sky when I had something similar happened; if I recall correctly, the company suggested what haunted has.
Hope it works!

Yep, I rebooted the modem and it didn't work. I have to do that a couple of times a week. This is a new problem with the wireless connector suddenly being unable to read the IP address for my computer. I did try to call Sky help late last night, and the wait was to be 44 minutes, so I gave up. I'll give them a call today.

Try going through http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php and using the geographical/landline numbers they list for Sky Digital. If I recall correctly, there is an option for broadband when you dial that. There is a freephone number listed for Sky Broadband but it may not work - haven't tried it.

I got ahold of Sky tech support, and they said since I was using my internal wireless card instead of a "dangle" purchased from them, that they couldn't help! I've never heard of such a thing! I fooled around enough that I finally fixed it on my own! Thanks for the tips!

I'm a little late seeing this thread to offer any help now, but what turned out to be the problem?   Or did you just "play" with it and now it works so you don't know?   :D

I'm not really sure. I got tech support to give me the IP address I should use, and input that manually. Then I got an error message saying the address conflicted with another computer on the network. So I deleted it and told the computer to go back to auto assigning the IP address, and it suddenly worked! It hadn't worked before when it was on auto-assign, so I'm just not sure what happened.
