How long can you keep your US driver's license?
« on: March 14, 2007, 02:44:42 PM »
I moved to the UK on a fiance visa in early December, and coincidently, my California DL expires later this month. Is it okay to renew it? I still have my name attached to my mother's address in LA, and have bank accounts in both LA and Michigan.

Any information would be most appreciated.
It's so green!

I renewed mine after living here for a while. My mom sent me the renew-by-mail forms and I sent them back to her. I can't recall why I did it that way though - she ended up posting them for me from the US. Regardless, it was no big deal. I just use mom's address.

No. Not true. I have both. I didn't have to show mine in order to get a UK one.

Charity- You can drive in the UK for one year on your US licence as long as it is not expired. If you go on the web to the driving licence bureau of the state that your licence was issued from, you can download the forms you need to get an extension for your US licence.

i really wish i could renew my US licence via post... but NJ says you had to do it in person now... i use my US licence as a form of ID when travelling internally in the US & i use it to hire cars.  i would NEVER give it up...

Missouri is a state that only allows military personnel and dependants to renew from overseas and I missed out on renewing in person because I couldn't find my MO voters registration card. As the Real ID Act takes hold, at some point states are probably going to move away from renewal by post or online to in person only and impose more stringent ID requirements to renew let alone to get a first license or state ID.

In Virginia, we can renew our license after 5 years ONLINE!  You just click a few keys and your new license (with your 5 year old picture) is sent to your US address.  The license is good for another 5 years. But after that, you need to go in person and get a new photo.

I had it sent to our old US address, which we still own.
