Where to live in west London and surrounding area?
« on: March 20, 2007, 07:03:42 PM »
Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can give us any ideas about where to look for housing in the west London suburbs.  We live in Uxbridge now (my husband is a lecturer at Brunel University) but would like to buy something and don't think that we want to settle here for good.

We'd like to live somewhere nice, low crime, within reasonable reach of central London (I could conceivably end up working there in the future), where we won't have to pay an arm and a leg for a house (meaning under about 250K).  We'd also like somewhere with good state schools--our son is not yet school age but I'm sure he will be before we know it.

I know that this is everyone's description of an ideal place to live  :)  but I would love any suggestions anyone could throw our way.  We've been thinking about places like Marlow, Windsor, Gerrard's Cross, etc. (although I know that it probably wouldn't be possible to live in those places given our budget, but just for an idea of what we're looking for).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Jade

Hi Jadeprice,

Just up the road from me - I'm in Slough!

For the 250K Budget you mention, what are your current expectations of the kind of place you want? 2 bed Executive apartment/flat? 1, 2 or 3 bed house? - I think you'd be able to get a place in a decent 5-6 out of 10 type area and say up to the 2 bedroom house. I think you'll be a little pushed for a 3 bedroom place unless you compromise on the area a little bit.

There's plenty of places all around here and you've mentioned some of them already. I can name you plenty more places too but the list would be way too exhaustive. My best mate bought a place in Iver almost a year ago and he likes it's villiage feel and doorstep of london location, but paid almost £200 K more than your budget for a 3.5 bedroom house (the 4th "bedroom" is so small you couldn't fit a bed in it!)

Have a look at upmystreet.co.uk (i think!) which will give you things about different areas such as schools, crime rates, sellign prices etc etc. Match as closely as you can your personal requirements with areas you shortlist. Also take a look around similarly distanced places around N, E & S London as pricing will vary to the extent of making you sit up and take notice!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!
