One For All remotes
« on: March 11, 2007, 04:11:32 PM »
I have a TV/DVD combo. It didn't come with a remote (I bought it secondhand), so I picked up one of these remotes today. I can get it to work for the TV, but not the DVD. Do these types of remotes not work on this type of set up? Any suggestions?

It will only work if it has been programmed with the correct codes for the unit in question.

There are different types of all-in-one remote controls.  Some are pre-programmed with a long list of different makes and models and you need to select yours from the list.  If the exact model isn't included, you may find that some features work but not others.

The most versatile all-in-one controls are the ones which you program from the individual remotes.  These don't restrict you to the list of makes/models pre-programmed, but of course you need the original remote control for each piece of equipment in order to set them up.   Sometimes you can use a combination of methods, selecting make/model from a list for anything which is included and then customizing other features from existing remotes.

Thanks Paul. I used the preprogrammed codes for the TV, no problem. Do you think the DVD has a different code than the TV? Is that possible since it's an all in one unit? I tried the set up method with the suggested codes, and I tried the method when you don't know the code and you have to search on the remote. Nothing happened when I tried that method.

Was the pre-programmed setting you used the exact model number for the TV/DVD combo unit?    There may well be a TV-only version of same set which will use the same infrared codes for volume, channel change, brightness, etc. but which obviously won't use the codes for DVD play, stop, forward, etc.

One other possibility:  Sometimes there is a little slide switch or a separate button which you have to press on the remote to switch between TV and VCR/DVD functions.
