National Insurance Number on Student Visa

I have a student visa and am married to a Brit, and am living in London. My visa is good for a year, and I know I can work 20 hours a week on it - can I get a NI number or do I have to get my marriage visa first before I can get my NI number?

yes, give your local jobcentre a ring and they'll fill out the application with you on the phone and tell you what to bring in for your interview.

thank you! for now this seems to be the easiest way to go, and cheaper than the marriage visa...until we have to get it!

You do know that the longer you leave it before switching tot he spousal visa, the longer it will take to get your permanent residency...?

When I was in BUNAC they told us the formula to have a temp NI number. I forget it but i want to say it has initials and your birth date in there somewhere. I  will look thru old papers and post it (if i can find them).
