Our pup made it! Seattle ---> London
« on: February 06, 2009, 10:20:29 PM »
What a saga. We began in July 2007, and our dog just arrived in the UK today. Lots of stress and worrying, but she is just fine (a little jet-lagged and confused, but generally happy). The people at the Animal Arrivals Centre at Heathrow were so nice to our girl, as well.
I originally was trying to tackle the process of our dog moving from Seattle to London via the PETS scheme by myself, without a pet mover. It would have been do-able, except for I got so stressed out about doing everything right that I ended up hiring someone that British Airways recommended. Our move was complicated because we needed to be over in London in October, and our dog wasn't ready until February. She stayed with a family member in Seattle, and so I was making arrangements for her from a long way away.
I would recommend hiring a pet mover if you can find one that does it at a decent cost from your city. Overall cost was $2500, including airfare, freight charges, a huge crate, and having a pro do a lot of the paperwork. I hired the pet mover when we were already in our 6-month countdown, so I already had a lot of the initial steps done.
If anyone has any questions about Seattle to London specifically, feel free to ask! I am just so happy we have our dog again and that everything is over with!

i think it makes sense to hire a pet mover when you can't be there physically on one end or the other. Congrats on your success!

That's great!  Did you use Lee Atwood?  He seems to have the WA market well covered and he did a really good job with my Frida.  I was also very impressed with the facilities at Heathrow.  I totally thought Frida was going to be whacked out from the flight, but she looked well-rested and positively radiant when I went to get her.  What a lovely surprise!  Congrats on being reunited with your pup. :)

Congrats!  I am always happy to hear another pet arrives safely!

Congratulations!!  I'll be going through the same thing this summer.  However, I live in the DC area.

Congrats  ;D  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Thats one of the reasons we used a pet transport company cause Dh & I were both in the UK & my cats were in a kennel in the States cause no one in my family could take in my cats. also we knew if they did all the paperwork there wouldn't be any mistakes that we might make & our cats would have been stopped coming home with us after there flight.

We did use Lee Atwood, on recommendation from British Airways. He ended up working out fine, but I was skeptical of him at certain points. Our dog was terrified of him when my parents took her out to pick up the crate. She tends to be nervous around new people, and he tried to "dog whisper" her, as I heard it, and she started growling at him. From then on, he seemed to dislike us on principle and even said things like, "Well hopefully it works out...they won't fly a dangerous and aggressive dog." I was really worried of the effect he had on our dog's behavior, and sort of cavalier opinion of whether or not they'd fly our dog after we paid him a ton of money to take care of it.
That said, she made it, and he ended up being really helpful.

Whoa, what a frustrating experience!  I never met him (my mom took care of all the stateside details), but I do have the most easygoing cat in the world and there weren't any problems.  It sounds like he was embarrassed and reacted defensively.  Not cool.  But I am glad to hear you have your "dangerous and aggressive" pup back.  ;)
