stamford hill -stoke newington area in london?
« on: April 14, 2007, 01:55:21 PM »
Hi everyone
I'm moving to London this Sept with my husband, and we're considering taking a 4 mo. sublet in the Stamford Hill-Stoke Newington area (but much closer to Stamford Hill). Anyone want to weigh in on the neighborhood? I'm a little concerned it will seem remote. (I'm going to be working in Bloomsbury, husband in Hammersmith, we think.) We're New Yorkers -- Manhattanites. The upside, of course, is that everything will be set and we won't have to search for a place of our own right away.  Thanks!

Hi Kd--

I really like Stoke Newington myself -- it has a Park Slope sort of feel (before Park Slope became ultra gentrified) Plusses are a great range of shops and restaurants on Stoke Newington Church Street (really lovely) and the High Street, Clissold Park and a sports centre at the Reservoir-Castle for sailing/kayaking/wall climbing so you'll find plenty to keep you occupied in the neighbourhood -- but to be honest it is remote -- and in my opinion the further away you are from SN Church Street it feels more so.

No tube so depending on where you live you'll have to rely mainly on the bus to get into town (or overland train to Liverpool Street) though Finsbury Park tube (Victoria/Piccadilly) is about 15-20 mins away by bus. Though come to think of it if you're in Stamford Hill proper it would probably make sense to go north to Seven Sisters to catch the Victoria line.

You're commute won't be so bad -- you can take the No. 73 bus down to Bloomsbury in 30-40 minutes but I don't envy your husband's trek to Hammersmith that one will be tricky.

But its only for 4 months -- not forever. You might fall in love with the area and stay or decide to move on.
