I know I could just go to a jewelry store, but I'd feel a bit guilty if I didn't have the intention to buy anything.

Don't feel guilty about that- it's what we did!  We went to two different jewelry stores to get our fingers sized, and it was fine (I'm guessing the salespeople there are used to such requests!)  So just tell your fiance to pop into the local jeweler's and problem solved!

You can even get your finger sized at a Wal-mart jewelry counter. I don't think they are generally bothered to be asked to do it, even if you aren't buying anything there.

My sister's engagement ring was $10,000 and the band was $3,000!! I couldn't believe it when she told me! How outrageous!

My sister's ring was about $5000.  I would feel bad even spending $1000 on a ring when there are so many nice ones for less than $500.  But then I tend to have more simple tastes in jewelry.

But yeah, I was always one of those people who chuckled when the DeBeers commericals came on and they started talking about two month's salary...There's nothing wrong with having nice, expensive things if you can afford them, but two months salary for me equals six months of rent!

Don't just go to your local jewelers.  Try your local goldsmiths, too, wherever the "arty" ones hang out.  One of my friends, a talented goldsmith, made my ex's and my rings, and they were gorgeous.  He specialized in celtic knotwork at the time, and we had him modify an existing design of a band for us to include stones.  But if we'd wanted something rather plain, he'd have done that for us too.

That is what I meant.  I went to a local place that mainly does silver jewelry but also some gold items.  Wow, I need to explain myslef better.

e-weddingbands.com will send you a set of ring sizers for free if you're in the US. If you're in the UK it'll cost you a wopping $5.00. They're a plastic version of the metal ones a jeweler would use.
