Stamp Duty Reform
« on: April 19, 2007, 11:03:14 PM »
Interesting article about calls to reform stamp duty on house purchases.
http://www.thriftyscot.co.uk/Finance-News/032007/hbos-calls-for-stamp-duty-reform.html

While the £120,000 initial stamp duty level has been under a lot of scrutiny, a less discussed topic has been the £250,000 level over which stamp duty rises from 1% to 3% of the house purchase.  It's unbelieveable that the number of houses affected over the past 5 years has risen 281% and just look at the amount of extra cash raked in by the Treasury!  A very nice cash cow for them.

I find it absolutely rediculous that you pay 1% for a £250,000 house and 3% for a £250,001 house!  Surely not only do the thresholds have to rise (poor Londoners really get shafted) but a graduated percentage really needs to be introduced.  I suppose there's a lot of properties on the market for £119,995 or £249,995 or the like to appeal to buyers.  Of course, not too long from now a £499,995 price tag might be common for houses in London to keep under the 4% threshold.

I don't see why stamp duty should exist at all.   The only fee payable to the government on the sale of a house should be a minimal one sufficient to cover the costs of updating the land register etc.   And that's going to cost the same whether it's a £95,000 house or a £1,000,000 house.

Sorry, that's not directed at you.  I can't help but laugh at the idea any government would only collect a fair amount for any service.  I may be slightly tainted by the new visa fees though.

I'm really hoping they do something about this soon. We'll be moving back to the US soon and our estate agent has said our house value is staying down because it is right at the £250k mark. I would love be able to jump that fence.
