HI from Califonia :)
« on: February 26, 2004, 04:23:06 AM »
HI everyone.
I am 28 female. I am trying to get information about living abroad. I have a boyfriend whom I love very much that is born and raised in London. I would follow him to the moon if he asked me too.
I would love to live there with him. We are both NOT ready for marriage yet so I wanted to stay with him while he finishes  Uni and things and somehow inbetween all that do get married.
I just need info on what kind of work permits i need to get and I am getting some of that help ( look in the working section i posted something)
I want to make sure that IF I did choose to move there, that I would be prepared.
THIS SITE IS SO HELPFUL and i hope that maybe somehow some of my questions can get answered.

Hi from GA!  Well you have come to the right place for answers.  If we can't find the answer we usually give it a darn good try.  I;m sure folks will fill you in on the intricacies of Home Office in the Visa section.  I hope things go well for you and welcome to UKY!

aweeeeee thank you . I feel so welcome :)
I just dont know what to do because I want to live there for a while before things get too serious. I don't want to just marry him cos i have to  u know.
I have a friedn that went there to london for 6 months but she was right out of College. Even if i had 6 months i am sure we woudl be engaged by then but i would still have to get a work permit right?
OOOOH why is this all so complicated and confusing.
Here in the states (and i know u guys agree ) we have some peopel that have jobs and own business that dont speak a WORD of english. SO i am sure there is a way i just have to find the right information right?
U GUYS are so nice here thank you. I really just want to change my life a lil bit. COs i am not happy where i am without him. :(

Lots of people here have been in similar situations, lady.  Immigration isn't easy, no matter how you look at it!

You do have a few options tho.  I have a friend who has been here almost as long as I have (nearly 3 years now!) on a school visa.  She takes a few classes at a London college and works 20 hours a week, and lives with her partner.  Just like you, they are adament that they aren't getting married just to satisfy the Home Office!  So it can be done, you just have to be flexible how you go about it.

I wouldn't recommend just coming over and hoping for the best tho.  It really isn't worth the risk!  (Just ask Peedal!)  :)

Welcome to UKY tho and good luck with your researching!!

Welcome ladymoonwalker! I hope things work out for you with finding a visa that's right for you.  :D

I have a friend who is in the same situation but isn't really in a position to do the school or work visa.  :-/ You should be able to find a way to move over if only for a few months/years at first.  ;D LDRs are difficult as most of us here already know.  :'(

HI lady!
There is SO much info about the fiancee visa in the immigration and visa forum.  My billions of questions are still posted up there with all the wonderful answers people here gave me.  I just sent off for my fiancee visa yesterday.

Like wishstar said, a student visa is pretty good.  You can only work part time, but if you want to go and do a Masters you can get a visa for a full year and that can give you time to figure out what you want to do.  Or, if you are student now or finished school from an american uni in the last six months there are student work exchange programs.

good luck!!!
