Egg Rolls
« on: May 01, 2007, 02:11:25 PM »
I have been craving egg rolls lately and here in Northern Ireland there is no place that I am aware of that carries any of the ingredients to even make them. I think spring rolls are gross and want my massivel oversized rolls from the Chinese back home. Anyone have any suggestions? Do Tesco or Sainsburys carry any of this stuff? I've not seen it. I know you need pork, cabbage and ginger but the wrappers are the hard part.

How often are you in Belfast? Have you been to the Asian grocer on the Ormeau Road?

I recently saw a recipe (I think it was a Weight Watchers recipe) that called for making them with filo pastry and baking them. Probably not exactly what you have in mind, but it might do in a pinch?

Do they have Sainsburys or M&S in Northern Ireland? Both carry decent spring rolls in their chilled sections.

Sometimes I think I could live on egg rolls. And cheese. And wine.

Lord, no wonder I need WW!  ;)

Modified to say that I just re-read the original post - yes, Sainsburys do carry them. Look in the chilled ready meals aisle - there should be a little section of Chinese foods next to the Indian foods. For some reason they don't stand out - I really have to search to find them but they're always there. Good luck!!

Also in Belfast, there's a lovely Asian store called Camseng off Lisburn Rd, near Tesco. They had all sorts of egg roll wrappers in the freezer case. Also everything else you would need.

Stella...not there very often but I'll check this place out when I'm up next Wednesday. What is that place called? I need proper wrappers or it won't be the same.

Elynor....thanks for that. Do you know the name of that place by chance? I like the thought of frozen as I can save for later :)

AnneR, thanks for the tips. I've had those spring rolls. They are nice but they aren't at all what I am looking for as egg rolls are more dense and filled with pork, cabbage and ginger. Spring rolls are more veggie based and have sprouts. They also have a lighter texture. I really don't like them.

I'll try this grocer and hopefully it will help. Otherwise, I need my mother to smuggle a good old NY Chinese egg roll in somehow :P

The name of the store is Camseng. I think the street is Lower Windsor Ave--I'll try to remember to look tomorrow. It's the street north of Tesco, and they usually have a sign out on the sidewalk at the corner. The store is a big white building with Chinese (I think...) characters on it. It looks a bit like a warehouse, but when you get inside it's a pretty nice store.

I saw the one on the Ormeau Rd recently, but only from the bus, so I'm not sure where it was or what it was called. I think it was reasonably close to Queen's...

I made egg/spring rolls once, a long time ago. Messy but fun, and very tasty. In fact, you might just inspire me to try again this weekend.

Good luck!

Thanks so much. I am really looking forward to this. Now I have to spend the next few days finding the recipe that will truly be the closest. I haven't had an egg roll like that in 2 years or so. Last time I was home I ate so much other stuff that I forgot. I'm regretting it now.

If you try to make them, let me know how they turn out :)
