Help! Water butt problem!
« on: April 26, 2007, 04:36:57 PM »
So we just had the garden landscaped and we're about to plant vegetables and put down grass seed, so we're going to need A LOT of water and we want to get a water butt so we don't have to run a hose from the kitchen through the house (if the predictions are right, there will probably be another hose pipe ban this summer, so that might not even be an option). Anyway, we have cast iron drain pipes, so there's no way we can attach a diverter for the water butt. Is there another option? Something that attaches to the bottom of the drain pipe and magically swooshes the water into the water butt? Giant funnels to catch the water as it falls from the sky? Fairies to water the garden at night?

Probably the easiest overall solution would be to replace the existing cast-iron downpipe with PVC into which you could then fit the diverter.   The only problem might be coupling up to the existing metal gutters, as new PVC pipe will be metric sizes.  There are adapters available though.

Thanks Paul - but, alas, while we are lucky enough to own one of the flats in the building that opens into a good-sized garden, I doubt that the other flat-owners would be happy if we changed the drain pipe! I'll ask around, though. In the meantime, I've got my giant watering can and two buckets lined up outside and I am praying for rain to fill them up!
