Wedding Blessing after wedding
« on: May 30, 2007, 07:50:40 PM »
I was wondering if any of the expat wives who have married in the states have also had a church blessing back in England and second reception for those who were unable to make the US one.

Mainly I'm wondering if CofE allows/has the ability to do a wedding blessing.  Oh and what process is involved.

I just had my blessing in a CofE this past weekend.  I just got back from the honeymoon.  You need a church that is willing to perform the ceremony, we got blessed at my dh's.  The ceremony at his church was free, because it was not a wedding per se, but they do not have to charge for the blessing, we know the Vicar so ours didn't.  They have to charge for a wedding.

My dh says speak to the Vicar, figure out what you want in terms of readings, hymns, ect.  You just need a date basically and hopefully the church and minister will be free. We had a little interview with the Vicar, she was really nice, it took about 2 hours and involved tea and biscuits.

If you go to http://www.cofe.anglican.org has a standard service on it somewhere that he based our service on.

Hope that helps.

Thanks!

I know my partner's mom is going to be a bit upset that we won't be doing it at the family church here in Yorkshire and instead in the states so i think this will be a nice way to do something here.  Plus all his family was married in the same church so it would be nice to have a blessing there since the wedding won't be.

Well, if the family is good friends with the Vicar, you might not have to pay for the service.  That is what happened to us.

Yes, hubs and I were married in the US then had a blessing in the village church (where hubs grew up and parents-in-laws still lived) four months later after we moved to England.  This was back in '96.

It was almost identical to an actual wedding, except the vows weren't exchanged.  The ceremony was nice and it meant a lot to hubs to have it.  I was even talked into wearing my gown again, which made me feel silly at the time, but looking back, all of the England crowd really seemed to enjoy the way we did it.

We are getting married in the states next month plus having a reception afterwards and then in August just having a UK reception(and I will be wearing my dress again!) I mean, why the heck not! Most people just wear their dress once, so this is a neat opportunity. ;D

We are also having a very professional photographer at our wedding, plus someone recording the ceremony, etc....so, between getting back to the UK in July and near the tail end of August, I will also be putting together a video(with my mad video editing skillz) that can be shown at the UK reception, just so they dont feel so left out on the actual wedding! ;)
