Anyone have any tips on the Cotswolds?
« on: May 02, 2007, 09:42:03 PM »
My parents are coming in June and want to spend some time in the Cotswolds. Does anyone know any good towns, hotels, things to do, see etc? I am thinking 4 days...does that sound like enough time?

Any help would be appreciated! TIA!

I rented a cottage there for a week and loved it. Unfortunately it seems the whole world population wants to squeeze into the Cotswolds so the down size is too many people visit there.
Tourism in general has become one of the environmental issues and is destroying so many places. Hope this doesn't put a damper on your plans.

It will not put a damper on my plans indeed...what a strange way to answer my question on visiting the Cotswolds! Not sure why you have responded with that...but will try again with someone else! Thanks.

I don't have any advice but I thought I'd let you know that you'll probably get more comments later when more people are online. Seems like very few UK-side UKers are online this time of day.

I agree though that Jay's comment was pretty um.. discouraging. Especially considering you asked for tips, not negatives!

Uh...I'll give it a go...Chipping Camden is lovely!!! I don't really have any ideas for hotels as I have just gone there on a day trip. We started in Oxford and just drove around to the little villages. I think 4 days is plenty of time, depending on what your parents are in to. We must have hit 4 or 5 villages in about 8 hours. I'm going to Stratford-Upon-Avon in a couple of weeks, so I can update you on that one if you'd like. And don't forget that Bath is technically part of the Cotswolds, so it's worth coming here for at least a day!  ;D

I used to live in the Cotswolds.  I highly recommend Broadway, Upper and Lower Slaughter (those are nice to drive/walk through), Stow-on-the-Wold is nice.  Those are in the North Cotswolds.  I used to live in the South Cotswolds and there Cirencester is nice.  What are they looking for - views, shopping, history?  Let me know and maybe I can give you some more tips.

They're going to love it!!

Gloucester Cathedral is well worth the visit!

My in-laws live just north of the Cotswolds near Stratford-upon-Avon, so I'm lucky to spend plenty of time in the area. Broadway, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold are some of my favorite towns. My mom and I once stayed in a lovely B&B in Broadway (friendliest owners, and very comfortable). I'll see if she remembers the name. Snowshill Manor (National Trust property) is worth a visit, and the lavender fields in the village are gorgeous. If you are looking to splash out, the restaurant at The Lygon Arms hotel in Broadway is supposed to be superb. I've never been there, but the in-laws went to a wedding there in December, and said the food was excellent.

My favourite pub in the world is The Fox at Lower Oddington, just outside Stow in the Wold, fabulous food and very friendly people and they do rooms,  but haven't tried them.  It's central and does fab scallops in a ginger dressing, yum!  Daylesford organic Farmshop and cafĂ© is just near and that's lovely.
So many beautiful villages and walks around and great antique shopping!
