Polish Delis
« on: May 05, 2007, 07:32:34 PM »
I went to a Polish deli today, and I have a couple questions.

First, which brand (if anyone knows) of pickles are the best if you are looking for the elusive dill/sour pickle?

Second, which brand of kielbasa or type of kielbasa would be the best?

Lastly, if you are looking for different types of mustards, they have a good range of choice, and also, they have Lays potato chips in 'normal' sized bags as well as the little bags of crisps you get here.

Thanks for any help. I will be going back to the Polish deli here soon and any ideas for what to get will be appreciated.

I would ask about kielbasa because it varies a lot.  Some is more garlicky than others etc.. Ask at the deli what they would recommend.

As for pickles, we found really sour ones at the polish grocer near us and they weren't the best.

Don't forget to get pierogis as well! (I like potato and cheese)

Haven't found any Polish pickles that contain dill and garlic and are in vinegar. The best ones we tried were in a vacuum pack with only some brine. But they were crunchy so we put them in a jar with some vinegar, garlic etc and after a day they were great.  Sorry I can't remember the brand but I think I did post about it here at the time I'll see if I can find the thread.

ETA: I found the other thread but didn't have the name of them there either. From memory the wiritng was all in Polish (funny that!) in red lettering.

I know perogies originate from Poland but do most delis carry them? I see a deli has opened up here in town and since it's very bare looking, I feel odd going in and asking. I KNOW people in this city have absolutely no idea what perogies are so I wonder if they would look at me funny as I know what they are. Either way, just wanted to know if that's standard.

If they have a freezer section, they are likely to have pierogies. If nothing else, they'll be chuffed you asked!

If you are a fan of sour cherries - such as for American-style cherry pie - you might be able to find a jar of sour cherries in juice at a polish deli. A friend got me some at a polish deli in London which I used for Black Forest Cake.

I'm still waiting for the local polish community get their act together and open a proper deli here. So far the asian stores are the only ones cashing in on that market!!!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

pierogis are so indigenous to Polish food that it would be odd if a polish deli DIDN'T have them.

they are a dumpling with filling in them that are boiled.  You can fry them in a bit of butter after boiling and serve with sour cream.  yummy yum yum.

I love the sweet cheese ones the best.

We bought some here and they were sweet, my kids refused to eat them!  We always have the savory ones.

I'm thinking I'll have to visit the polish grocer.  I don't know why I don't do it more often, it's right by my work.

I like the mushroom ones too.  I don't think Steven has ever had them, so maybe I'll try to find a polish deli around here. MMMM!!!!

:o we have this polish deli that we accidently stumbled apon when I was a kid. They have the MOST wonderful salami in the world! It's delicious...and my mom used to buy like a pound of it and some really good cheese and we'd eat it as a snack...rolled up with the cheese. oh it was so good! I can't recall the name though :-\\\\
