dual-voltage multi-region DVD player
« on: May 22, 2007, 02:04:15 AM »
I bought a DVD player from a store, $50 and it's multi-region and the voltage was advertized as 100-240V. I got it Friday and on the back of the player it says it's 110-220V. The manual says 100-240V in one place (The English language part), but 110-220V in the Spanish language part.

I called the store today and they said that it should still be fine in the UK, but I worry that since the player itself says it goes up to 220V that it may not quite work.

The multi-region works great, but I specifically bought this one for the voltage range since DB and I are moving in a year and this way we could take it with us.

Thoughts?

It almost certainly uses one of the modern switched-mode power supplies which would probably work fine on anything from about 90 to 250 volts.

It's sloppy work in my opinion when the labels and manuals don't agree, not to mention confusing to people, but the reason is almost certainly to do with the nominal supply voltages which are/have been used in various parts of the world.

My guess would be that the manufacturer had different people writing the English and Spanish parts of the manual and rather than working to the one specification they "adapted" it slightly to suit what they thought was the intended market.  220V has been the declared voltage in many Spanish-speaking countries for years, while 240V is more traditionally associated with the U.K., Australia, etc.

The specified supply voltages are only nominal values anyway;  the precise voltage will vary up and down during the day depending upon electrical demand in the area.

In a nutshell, you should be fine.   :)

Thanks! That's what the store said, but I wanted a second opinion.  ;D

Let me know how it works because I will buy one before I move.  I mean, for 50 bucks, you can't go wrong...

It works great!  ;D I have a couple of DB's DVDs and both his UK DVDs and my US DVDs work in it. My only concern was the voltage in the UK (220V vs. 240V), but Paul said that it will be fine and that's what they said at the store too.  :)

I love that it can be taken back and forth, we were talking about buying a DVD player that unlocks (there was no unlock code for my DVD player) but I didn't see the sense in buying a new one for a year. Then I found one that was multi-region and dual-voltage and saw the price and there was something I thought was worth investing my money in!

The link in my original post is the link for where I bought it. I ordered it online and it was here in 3 days (UPS Ground). It's an actual store in Illinois, so people who live there may be able to go to the actual store. If not, with shipping it works out to be about $60. Still a deal when you figure you can use it in both countries if you ever plan to move!

yes, I bought a samsung at best buy and it was dual voltage and plays multi region dvds. They just don't advertise that. Its best to find a company that builds for mutliple markets. Sometimes they don't spend the money to make different versions of the same product.

I had looked on Best Buy online and then called to ask and they said they didn't have any. I have a gift card for their for my birthday and would have used that if they seemed to have any. I looked at all the voltage ranges...
