LED Colour Changing Light Kits
« on: May 27, 2007, 06:27:33 PM »
My loft conversion is underway and builders are doin the first fix next week, so need to tell em where i want lights, wall lights, sockets and switchers, etc.

Whilst in my local, B&Q i came across some LED lights that change colour, seen the same brand of kits on ebay for half the price. Does anyone have any experience with these and what are your thoughts on them ?

I'm considering this kit

They're handy for "mood" lighting effects, marking walkways, and so on, and being LED have the advantage that the lights themselves run cool.  That could be an important consideration if the proposed location makes ventilation awkward.

As well as these multi-color kits with controllers you can also get kits or individual lights and transformers to make up your own combinations of lighting, for example:

Right just gone to my local electrical wholesalers and they have the LED GU10  colour changing bulbs which fit into the normal downlighter fittings. They run of the mains and can be dimmed too. A remote has various settings for the colour changes, etc. Colour change bulbs are £28 each, remote is £15. Normal downlighters are £6 each ! Got 10 of those, total came to £150 with a little discount.

Just discovered i need fire hoods to go over the downlights, these are £6 each too !

You shouldn't really need fire hoods with LED lights, since they don't run hot.

The problem here, however, is that if you're using standard GU10 downlighter fittings somebody could come along at a later date and replace your LED bulbs with regular halogens, so it would be a good idea to fit them anyway (and would almost certainly be required by building regulations in this case).

People often don't realize how much heat those halogen downlighters can generate.  I once had somebody want about two dozen of the things installed in a living-room ceiling which was packed full of straw!   Ended up costing him a small fortune to have sections of the ceiling replaced all around where each light was to go.
