US Airways change in baggage weight

Don't know if this just started this past weekend or what, but US Airways now allows a max weight of 50 lbs per bag on flights.

I just took a short trip to the States this past weekend and last week looked and saw it was a 70lb limit.  Seeing as some of my things are still back in the states and that I wanted to do some serious shopping, I packed a small case inside a large one for the flight to the US.  When i tested it before i left it was roughly 65 lbs and I had no issues at Manchester on Friday morning.

On my way back (now with the 2 cases full) i was greated at Philidelphia with a notice that baggage limits were now 50 lbs or you would be charged $50-80 surcharge.  One of my bags was over 50 lbs and i offered to displace it into the other case but they let me go (this time).

Don't know if this is a new policy or if I've just always been below the limit before but I thought I would put it out there in case anyone else was making any flights on US Airways and looking to bring over heavy cases!

Is this per passenger or bag? Sounds like its per bag? How about carry on?

BA started it earlier this year and it sucks. Flying in today's world is already a major hassle then they add this new restriction (in order to make more money, of course). I think I need to see the world in the next couple of years and then stop traveling because its just not fun anymore. 

I flew US Airways when I moved here in March and I thought the 50 lbs weight limit for checked bags had been in effect for quite awhile, it was well before I came over. I really struggled getting my 2 big suitcases under 50 lbs, they came in at 48 lbs and 50 lbs exactly.

They all seem to be changing. I noticed last year that the majority of American based airlines had switched, but the European ones were still mostly 70lbs/bag. Now almost everyone has gone with 50.   :\\\'(

i've been told that this was for health&saftety of the workers.  having to lift heavy bags, etc. annoying, yes.

I think all the airlines are doing this to help off set the cost of fuel.

We just flew on United (first and last time!) and they also have 2 checked bags, max 50 lbs each.  We always do major shopping at home, so flying back to England is when we use the second bag.  Works great to pack that inside the big suitcase.
