I am sorry to say that you are required to file unless you have abandoned domicile in Iowa.

Iowa looks at items such as exercising voting rights in Iowa and claiming homestead credits; certainly voting in Iowa will lead the State to argue that you are still demonstrating rights of citizenship in Iowa.

You'd have to definitely have left the State and be able to show intention never to return to escape Iowa domicile.

This could however significantly increase your UK tax bill if you appear to be domiciled over here, so a careful review of your facts would be needed to figure out what actions/filings save you the most money overall.

Whisper,

Ever hear of the concept that once you put pen to paper (or type on a message board), you've made a statement that you can't take back?  And then there's what's going on with Guya and me:  For legal reasons, Guya and I have to give hardline advice on this forum.  We have to tell you what's right.  We can tell you somthing is grey, but we can't tell you what side of grey as we're not paid advisors, this is publicly posted.  Keep back-and-forthing with us on an open forum, and all of a sudden your tax situation goes from being a nice grey Schrodinger's cat to single hard outcome; which in your case, isn't a very nice one so far.

This whole thing should be offline with a paid advisor, who can let you know what you really have to do.

Unfortunately, tax in multiple countries is no longer a 1040EZ and moves into grey.  I do worry about the people who post questions here, as many of them back themselves into a corner by stating fluid situations as facts rather than hypothesizing - what if I do this, what if I do that.

Perhaps Kitsonk, the moderator of the forum, could post some sort of guideline for how to phrase questions.  I'd be happy to help her write the post.
