light box for seasonal affective disorder
« on: July 24, 2007, 03:04:55 PM »
I want to get a "light box," the device with a light bulb of some sort, which you sit in front of to get artificial "sunlight" so that a person doesn't get sad when living in a cloudy place. (I have a prescription for one of these that will get it for me here in the US for free.)

Do you know if a "voltage converter" would work with an appliance like this in the UK? I'd hate to haul it to the UK and then burn down my apartment and burn out the item in the process.

Thanks

All my appliances from the USA worked as long as I had a converter and an adaptor.

Be careful with the type of light.   Transformers convert voltage, but not frequency (which is 60Hz in the U.S., 50Hz U.K.).   If the unit just uses filament lamps, or fluorescent tubes fed from electronic driver circuitry then the frequency difference won't be an issue, but if it uses conventional fluorescent lights then the lower frequency can cause problems, including the ballast running hotter than normal and the tubes having a shorter life.
