Milk Pasteurized?

I've been looking, and can't find any info. Do any of you know if the milk in glass bottles, the gold top kind that comes in the shops, is pasteurized? Also, is jersey milk pasteurized? I just don't want to take any chances while pregnant, and my hubs keeps buying yummy glass bottle milk.

sorry i cant answer your questions, but hope you will be able to drink the Jersey milk... it's so gorgeous!!

i only started drinking it a few months ago, but i love it... especially the bits of cream that gather in the lid/neck area of the bottle!  ;)

According to the FSA website, if it is NOT pasteurised it needs to carry a warning.  I would guess that any milk you can pick up in a major supermarket is likely to be pasteurised anyway.

Given the UK's fears over food hygiene, I seriously doubt you could buy unpasteurized milk in ANY supermarket here. I think you'd have to buy that direct from a farmer! HOMOGENIZED is another story though. That is easily purchased and is what you describe with the Jersey milk.

Now I'm confused, is homogenized ok to drink then? And the glass bottles say sterilized milk.....is that somehow different?

In the old days when all milk came in glass bottles, gold top was definitely pasturised. I didn't even know you could still get gold top!

edit: I meant pasturised not sterilised!

Sorry, of course homogenized is ok!! It just means that the cream hasn't been mixed with the rest of the milk, hence the creamy top you get. Yum!

Once milk is homogenized it does not form a cream layer which in un-homogenized milk this was common and one would look for the cream line on a pint of milk and if you did not want the cream to come out first then the bottle was given a good shake to redistribute the cream.

Is it possible to be even MORE confused??!? :P  But probably you guys are right about the pasteurized, I won't worry too much, and just enjoy the yummy milk!

All milk sold in stores is pasteurized... the only place to get the natural stuff is on a farm and even then they have warnings...

you are fine..

Do check cheeses and products containing them though... as well as some juices... they will all be clearly labeled though that they are not pasteurized. 

If you are really worried about anything liquid you can bring it to a boil yourself and cool it to drink later. Though I would think that a bit OTT... :-)
