need a new mobile - used is ok but where to go?
« on: July 13, 2007, 10:20:23 PM »
DH and I are not overly techy. We don't use our mobiles that much so don't require anything very fancy.

My Motorola is in the process of dying and DH's phone is so old it's embarrassing! :D

Someone gave us a nice Nokia but we need a new charger for it (is ebay the best for that?).

So now we need another phone but I don't know where to go. We use 'pay as you go' so all I want to do is take my SIM card and plunk it into another phone.

Is ebay good for this? Or do I go to one of those shops that seems to sell phones and SIM cards and all that stuff (i.e. not the chain ones, the independent ones)?

Ugh. I hate this. I'm so behind the times with all this mobile rubbish!

Help!

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

You can pick up good cheap phones (PAYG) most places.  If your network is vigin, you can go to Virgin Megastores-they sometimes have used phones for good prices or cheap ones.  Woolies do good, cheap phones in different networks.  Or you can try Carphone warehouse, go to the PAYG section and you'll see ones from different networks some for as little as £20 or £30.  :)

You can get Nokia chargers from any mobile phone shop for about a tenner. I got my current phone from a 2nd hand mobile place about a year ago. I think I paid £30 for it and it is still going strong. The trouble with buying one new is even is you get a PAYG they expect you to buy a certain amount of credit on a new sim card so if you want to keep your existing Sim (& number) it's easier to go 2nd hand. That's my experience anyhow.

Is ebay good for this?

i've sold some of my old phones on ebay for pretty reasonable prices.

I got my PAYG mobile plans at Carphone Warehouse usually under £50 for a phone, sim and £20 of credit.

I think second hand is what I need. We both already have SIMs and numbers we don't want to change. We don't need the new phone out of a box with the SIM and credit. And I don't want to pay more than 20 quid for DH's phone. He primarily uses it out in his field sites to keep in touch/for emergencies. He's just as likely to accidentally dump it in a river (!!) so cheap is the primary goal here!

I'll have a look on ebay but there's just so much stuff on there!

Oh cool! Thanks! I assume the Nokia chargers are universal? That there aren't different ones for different models?

I'm so useless with all this!

PM on it's way...

What does he do for a living?  Sorry as an archaeologist, the phrase "field sites" automatically catches my eye.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Yes, pretty sure they are. When I was back in the states I could even use my sister's Nokia charger for my phone.

:)

He's a scientist - geology and geomorphology. He's worked with archaeologists a bit though. Right now he's playing around a river catchment in north Devon.

All I can say is Very. Smelly. Mud. :P

Thanks Jules, just sent you a PM!

Yeah, I wish someone would recommend a phone that's extra tough or has a case that completely seals out mud, dust, and grit.  Phones suffer - there needs to be field testing of equipment for mud skippers like us. [smiley=mad.gif]
