Yes!  I went to Munich last December and loved it.  The markets were lovely.  Definitely would recommend it.  Munich is such a nice city as well.  Not too crowded, easy to get to, and comfortable atmosphere with cool things to see.  I want to go back!

part of this is a bit of ulterior motive- we're trying to work the in-laws up to flying long distance... we started in may stanstead-dublin.  now we're looking for a longer more foreign place... the eventual aim is to get them to the US.  baby steps...

looking at the Cologne one.  but munich is a fun city- been there on business several times.  i'll look into that one as well.

Yes, it's lovely!  I was in Berlin at the beginning of December and the Christmas markets were in full swing.  There's several around the city, mostly concentrated in the main area of town.  There's some you have to pay (a token 1 euro, I think) to get in and some for free.  Lots of cheap food & Glühwein as well!!

The best Christkindlmarkt in my opinion, is in Nurnberg (nuremburg) Germany.  It is an old, traditional market with all the fun food, drink and gifts, plus the nativity set right in the middle.  It is located outside the cathedral and is just a beautiful setting on a cold, December night.  But there are so many to choose from - another favorite of ours was in Trier Germany.  Trier is a beautiful city all by itself with remains from the Roman times and they do a fabulous Christmas market as well.
Another really nice city is Koln (cologne) - they have a couple of Christmas markets in different parts of the city - one near the beautiful cathedral.  It is really easy to ride the train from anywhere in Germany to get to them.

And then there is the wonderful little town of Seiffen that is in the East (south of Dresden) which is where the nutcracker was born!  This little town is fantabulous during advent (really anytime of the year).  They have a Christmas market, but really the fun is just visiting the city and all the little workshops where all the nutcrackers and smokers and wooden toys are all made.

But I also have to agree that the Birmingham Christmas market is outstanding.  We would visit at least 2 times per week either during the day or evening to just have the schwenkbraten (pork steak on the swinging grill) or dampfnudeln (steamed dumpling with vanilla sauce), a little gluwein (glowing wine) to drink and warm you and do a little shopping (polish pottery and other little gifts).
Wherever you choose, I think you will have a fun experience...have fun

I haven't been to the markets in Germany, but the ones in Vienna are amazing. As far as cities go, I think Vienna is more charming and friendly than Munich. From what I understand, though, the Nurnberg market is the ultimate.
Be careful of the gluehwein hangover...  :-X

We went to the one in Cologne this past Christmas. It was really nice and worth it just to see the cathedral too! We took a train from there to Dusseldorf where there was also a market and it was lovely! The Cologne market actually has a few different ones around the city and each have a different feel. Let me know if you have any specific questions about it!

6 year resident in Germany, so I can't resist.

Top 3 Christmas Markets IMHO

1st place - Regensburg
2nd place - Nuremberg
3rd place - Strasbourg

OK, Strasbourg is really in France, but it has enough "Teutonic gravitas", mixed in with Alsatian food, to make it in to the top 3.
