notifying summer school about TMJ
« on: August 01, 2007, 09:42:01 AM »
I have finally decided that I really want to go to a summer course in Italy (24 August- 8 September) that I received a grant to attend (covers most costs). It will require me to do some tutoring. However, I am concerned about my TMJ/medicine side effects causing issues. I am planning on contacting the course organizer, but I am not sure exactly how to word it. I am currently waiting to see a TMJ specialist (12 Sept.) so I am not getting the best care at the moment. Not many people know about TMJ. I suppose I could say something about how I get a variety of symptoms, but that when I get a bad tension headache or muscle spasms, I may need to take a bit of a break?

I really want to word this email correctly because my new health concerns have caused me to wonder if I should not go at all to the summer school, but I don't want to stop attending potentially beneficial things just because I now have chronic pain that sometimes gets nasty.

don't let it stop you.

live your life and deal with the pain as it comes. i can't stress this enough.

you could explain that you have a chronic, degenerative joint disease. that's what it is. i've had to explain it to employers in the past. just because most people haven't heard of it doesn't make it any less legitimate.
it's not where you're born, it's where you belong

Thanks so much for your message. I am fortunate that my uni has been understanding so far; I just showed them a sheet with info on TMJ disorder and that seems to help clarify things for people. I got a nice email from the woman in charge of the summer school in Italy saying that she would understand if needed breaks at times and I could probably get a single room; unfortunately, it looks like I will not be going because of visa issues. On the bright side, I studied several hours this week and I am finding yoga to helpful as well.
