Plasticware and tupperware
« on: March 26, 2004, 05:50:16 PM »
This is going to seem silly but as I was busily making my loaf of bread this am I thought, "Oh my god what if they don't have plastic mega containers for bulk flour and other goods."

I know it's silly, but I would need to know to take them if they don't have them.  I make bread quite frequently (a few times a week) and need to have larger quanities available.  So whats the verdict?  Does the nation that does not do plastic ziploc bags have larger storage containers?  What about 5 or 10 gallon containers for winter storage?

I have puchased some since I have been here - but havent seen anythign much migger than 2 litres, which I imagine is big by UK standards.  And the quality isnt nearly as good.

I would bring one or two, maybe a set that stcks inside itself to conserve packing room?

The thing I miss are those wonderful Ziploc disposable containers - there great for us bachelors who microwave everything and end up ruining the contaienrs at some point anyway.

We have "ziploc" bags here - not the ones with the actual "zipper" thingy - but the ones that seal closed.  I buy 3 different sizes of the freezer ones for all sorts of uses.

As for plastic food storage containers, I know they have various sizes available.  Have never looked for really big ones (I find I don't have leftovers to speak of with 3 guys in the house!).

I'm betting you can find what you need, but not in a grocery store or kitchen store.  You'd probably be better off looking at a home store like B&Q or something in the storage aisle...what you find probably won't be intended for food use (more likely sweater storage), but it'll work and will be much bigger than what you'll find anywhere else!  :-)

I'd try Asda or Wilkensons.  That's where I get all that sort of stuff.  Although, I'd probably bring it with me though, if I had some I particularly liked and used alot.

I was surprised when for the life of me I couldn't find a storage thingy for cakes. The best I could find for a decent sized layer cake was like a regular big tupperware container one with the lid on top.  :o How you get the cake in and out without a mess is beyond me.

When I asked in shops for the normal ones that has the sturdy bottom for serving and the bowl-shaped top just goes over the cake, they all gave me funny looks.  :-/

You know for sweaters, random crap...my father in laws "collectibles"  ;D ..um Christmas ornaments.  We keep a bunch in the attic and in the garage.  I avoid cardboard as it gets damp quickly and can attract bugs and rodents.  :P

Well maybe not sweaters.....

Oh those things.  You can get them anywhere.  Homebase, B&Q, Woolies, Wilkensons, Lakeland Ltd,  Ikea.  Ikea is my place of choice for those sort of boxes.

To be fair, I've had a devil of a time finding exactly that in Florida as well over the past few years.  Best I could do was find them in "dollar" stores - but hardly ever where you would expect, like Wal-Mart or Target or Kmart.

I guess people don't bake homemade cakes too much anymore, they figure.   :-/

I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding the containers you want here, vnice....what you *may* have trouble with is finding room in your home to store the containers!   :-/
