i worked in a donut shop while in high school. Every night I would have to throw away hundreds of donuts so that the new batch can come in.

I asked why not give them to the homeless shelter? I was told it was because they complained about not having enough glazed....  ???
I was required to just chuck them. So when a customer came in shortly before or while I was doing it, I'd throw a bunch in for free.

When I was in high school I worked at McDonald's I usually worked 5pm till closing.  ::) so when anyone came in close to closing I would give them extra food so we didn't waste it by throwing it out. but if the manager was around I didn't do it though.  ;)

I've been places where they've done that too. My friend and I got an almost whole cake from Panera Bread one night when we were there at closing because they would have to get rid of it. They said the staff does take some of it, but obviously they can't take all of it.

I'm tempted to do this after reading the article, but I'm a scaredy cat as well!
