Found flat in London despite cats! Anyone lived in Southwark?
« on: August 24, 2007, 07:58:50 PM »
DH has been in London the past few days finding us a flat and we finally have one! I underestimated how difficult it would be to find places that would allow cats - it boggles my mind that people would object to cats in flats...they are clean, quiet, and don't destory anything except furniture! (we only applied for unfurnished flats  ;D) Nine out of ten places we were interested in said no pets, period. You'd think we told them we had 3 giant Mastiffs or something instead of sweet, well-behaved kitties. Some people in agencies made rude remarks or actually burst out laughing when DH told them we had cats ???  >:(  :-X

But....now we have a really cool place near Southwark station in zone 1. I have never lived in this area, only visited (but I used to live in Lambeth North/close to Waterloo and I liked it a lot - we wanted to stay on the south bank). Anyone lived in Southwark or Borough? Borough market is less than a 10-min walk from our place so that's cool  :)

Anyway, what a relief to have that piece sorted. Erm, now all I have to do is....everything else! 3 weeks to go!

Amended to add: We did have to pay extra deposit for the cats (amounting to 2 months' rent:o)

VERY nice!

I nearly bought a flat just on the other side of Borough Market (at London Bridge).
It's a GREAT area!  Lots of great stuff right at your doorstep, and enough bridges to cross over to Central London/West End, etc. without having to rely on public transport.

Congrats!

I'm looking for a flat soon near the river and nearer the City.  Since you've done the looking, is £700 a month unrealistic for a studio in that area?
If you don't know where you're going, it doesn't matter what road you take.

I wasn't looking for studios so I'm not sure - one time-saving suggestion I can give you, though, is to use sites like findaproperty.com and rightmove.co.uk for general ideas only - many of the properties on these sites are old and have been taken....but they can lead you to agents in areas you're interested in that might have similar flats. Find something you like then go directly to the angents' sites. We found that sites like gumtree and loot were a waste of time too, though we were in a hurry and didn't have the time to wait days for answers to our e-mails.

That's a nice area, you're lucky.  Southwark is lovely, especially near the Borough side.  You can go to the market on the weekend and positively thrive in all the freshness! :)

Congratulations!  Sounds like you found a wonderful new home, and close to a market, enjoy the fresh food.  Hope the kittens settle into their new abode well.  It is always funny watching how animals react to their new surroundings.  Happy flat-warming!

Welcome to the area, it's a great place to live.  Did you realise you are only like 10 mins' walk from where you used to live?

There is a really good community website here, with a very active forum area:
