Is Lidl really that much cheaper?
« on: August 30, 2007, 05:42:37 PM »
I've been to Lidl a few times, and have found some bargains, but is it really any cheaper than shopping at Asda? We're pretty broke this month and need to do some seriously cheap shopping, but I find that even if I go to Lidl, I have to go to Asda or another shop to find the rest of the things I need. Spending that much on petrol isn't really very economical in my opinion, but maybe I just don't look hard enough at Lidl.

So ... what do you buy at Lidl that is a lot cheaper than bigger supermarkets? Do you find everything you need?

Produce is usually pretty cheap.  I bought mangos there last week for 39p each.
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

At Lidl you will find a lot of things are as cheap as the big supermarket own brands or "value" brands but they are much better quality.  That's my experience anyhow.

yes....we just did a shop for under £70 that will last us 2 weeks at least. we mostly eat three meals a day at home and eat very well (2 adults and a dog). i like that there isn't 20 choices of any given product..but rather a couple of quality brands to choose from. there is very little that we can't find at lidl...hey sounds like a slogan!

I did a major shopping trip at ASDA and then took the receipt to LIDL the next time since LIDL is closer to me.  I was just curious.  Some things were less at ASDA, but many things were less at LIDL.  I think it balanced fairly well in the end with LIDL coming out slightly cheaper overall, but like you said, I could not find everything there.  I still was able to provide good meals with only an occasional supplement from Tesco or ASDA.
