Provisional License
« on: September 26, 2007, 11:57:58 AM »
Ok, so I'm going to sign up for my provisional license but the DVLA says that I need to post my passport out with the application and a few other things.  I REALLY hate posting my passport because I have thousands of dollars worth of visas in there. I know that I can send it recorded delivery or courier it.. but has anyone gotten around having to send there passport? Is there anything else I can send such as a certified copy of my passport.  The woman on the phone I just talked to seemed to have no idea... so im asking all of you...

Thanks!  :)

You have to send it in, there's no way around it.

No way around it i'm afraid.  Unless you go to Swansea in person.

Even then, there's no way around it if you have a US passport.

I thought that may be the case... thank you!

Some of my work-mates have suggested special delivery with insurance... and it seems like the best option because it gets it there next day and insures it up to £1000.  Sounds okay to me, what do you think?

I thought you can take your US passport to Swansea and have it checked when making an application there?  I believe a few people here did that as they were unable to surrender their passport for any length of time.

I haven't heard of anyone doing that on this board, although if they have it would be good to hear how it works, especially for people who live near Swansea.

Yes, as you can see from post, sadly there's no way around it.

The good news is despite my worrying, I had my passport, marriage license and provisional all back within a week. Definitely make sure you get a special delivery envelope from the post office (around 5 pounds, i believe) and bring it with you to the DVLA.
