Getting Closer to going...
« on: October 21, 2007, 03:44:17 AM »
Hi all
Posting again. Okay, definitely getting closer to my dream to moving to Scotland, been offered a very, very good job, sorting out whether or not I'm going on a work permits or HSMP visa. Luckily I am being relocated and have someone who will sort out housing, utilities, banking, for me.  Thank goodness!! But I don't have anyone I know- not like I'm moving over to be with a spouse or anything, so I'm going to rely on ya'll, because I have like 1 million different questions. Well okay- maybe not 1 million, but a few gnawing ones. And I know that these questions have probably been answered 1000 times before, and I will continue searching for them, but any advice you have will be great.  1.) Driving laws in Scotland- any good websites that I can check out? Driving on the left doesn't scare me, done that a few times before, and I drive a manual transmission now (and I'm left handed!) but need to know little idiosyncrasies of driving in the UK. I know about the driving licenses and stuff, I'm talking more about when you can turn, what different road signs mean, etc, so that I can start driving right away and not be an idiot.  Roundabouts don't phase me, because having grown up in New England, you're used to them, even though we drive the opposite way through them than the UK.  2.) Speaking of driving, how the heck do I go about getting a new (well used, probably) car without any credit history? 3.) I know I can't bring my telly, my DVD/VCR, etc because that stuff just won't work, but my very expensive and very happy to have Kitchen Aid Mixer, Food Processor, etc will they be fine with a very expensive transformer? What about my guitar amplifiers? Should I worry?  4.) My desktop computer has a switch for the voltage, so I just need a plug, but my monitor doesn't, what should I do?  Get a new one while there?  How do I cut the cord off and make it a new one (read that somewhere)? Simple electronics? I'm an engineer, so I am not worried too much on actually doing it, just don't want to ruin a very expensive flat screen monitor 5.) How do I call the US without it costing me an arm and a leg? How do they call me? All those digits in UK telephone numbers scare me every time I dial them (through work or a phone card) and scare my parents and sisters even more, I am not sure they even know how to call another country!  How do I set this up? Home and Mobile phones? Will they both allow me to do that? What about traveling back to the US or through Europe, how does this work?

Sorry if this has all been answered before, I just know you've all been there and were just as scared as I was.  Thanks for your help

I have a 2 year old climbing all over me, so can't take too much time to answer your questions right now, but I live in Inverness and if you need any local info I will be happy to help.  There are actually a few of us on here.  Best of luck!

Get a copy of the Highway Code.   Learn it.  Know it.  Live it.  ;)
