Parcel delivery telephone scam
« on: November 23, 2007, 12:49:20 AM »
There seems to be a batch of e-mails doing the rounds again which say this:

Quote
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize.    If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call.

If you receive an e-mail quoting this particular company name and phone number, please don't waste your time and your friends' by forwarding it as suggested.

First, as is common with these warnings of scams, some of the facts are wrong.  You would not be charged £15 as soon as you call.  The premium-rate number listed carried has a listed tariff of £1.50 per minute.   Second, this particularly scam was already shut down almost 2 years ago.

Instead, you might like to point the friend or associate who sent you the warning to this document which explains the above:

I've also heard of a very similar scam doing the rounds, the difference being that they actually stole a bunch of the official Royal Mail missed delivery cards and have their super-high rate phone call stamped on like normal.

I think a lot of people are savvy enough to not fall for email spam but one that looks so genuine in the post, maybe not. But this is all heresy, I don't actually know anyone who's received one so maybe it's all a hoax anyway!

But this is all heresy...

I agree.  Let's get the Inquisition to burn them!

Hehe..... Take 'em out back of the telephone exchange and connect them across their own phone line, then every time somebody calls it..... Bzzzz!    [smiley=devilish.gif]

I've just noticed that I messed up some of my first post in this thread.    :-[   That'll teach me to post that late at night.

theres a scam going on currently now. They always call in the evenings when I'm at work and when my husband answers, they ask for me, and say its "the bank" calling. They never give the name of the bank, and refuse to talk to my husband, only want to talk with me. When he said I wasnt in during the evenings, they were persistant to get my mobile number from him
