Packing tips?
« on: August 14, 2007, 07:35:20 PM »
Hi all!

Moving to Norfolk next week from Ohio.  Any advice on what to pack/not to pack??

I'm super excited - hoping to shake the nerves quickly before work starts!

Pack the rain gear, leave the summer clothes.  :P

Seriously, though, welcome to UK-Y, and best of luck with the move!

A transformer for your appliances, preferably a heavy duty one.  I made one of the low end ones burn out.  (I know I should have read the specifics but black writing on black plastic isn't so easy to make out, plus I wanted my hair dry to leave the flat.)  Anyhow, I agree with the above two posts, pack everything, especially pictures and comforts from home.  Definitely pack your umbrella and a nice jacket, but we have had very warm weather the past week, so be prepared for fickle mother nature.  I was happy I brought over my cheap closet organizers that hang, just my personal preference though.  It is great here, welcome to you and have a safe journey. :)

Hi & welcome JMC from a native Clevelander!

Pack a bit of everything.  Depending on where you've lived in Ohio you'll know you can have every season in the same day...same over here.   ;)  However, winter seems to be a lot milder (well at least here in Yorkshire anyway).  You may end up missing defined seasons (visually), but other than that the weather's pretty varied.

Good luck with the move!

DH's company paid for our move and I had our movers pack empty boxes for us!  The policy w/ our relo package is that we get the same # of boxes going back.  God knows I'm going to accumulate more stuff!  So if you're on a relo package see what your policy is!

I too am debating on what goes in the boxes. There's some great lists in this forum. From the main community page hang a click at "Moving Issues." The first few posts are pretty good information:  "What I Should Have Brought" What I Wish I Didn't Bring" and "What I Wish I knew Before I Moved." The last one is kind of funny. Just check the date of the post as some things don't seem to be true anymore. ;D

Bring non-perishable food you know you'll miss.  I'm so glad I did.  Also, lots of photos and knicknacks to make it feel like home.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.
