Can I bring plants?
« on: September 06, 2008, 01:13:53 PM »
I'm going to be moving from Dublin, Ireland to London soon. I'm hoping that I can bring my houseplants with me, but have a suspicion that this might not be possible. Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks!

I don't think you are allowed to bring in live plants at all.

I think it's more the soil, insects and microbes that are restricted.  Likely some species of plants too.

Possibly you could send bare root plants, but there is probably so much paperwork+expense, I doubt it's worth it.

The potato famine started because of micro-organisms that came to Ireland on shipping cargo, and thrived unchecked due to favorable conditions.  We know how that ended up!

So I just asked my moving company about this and they said as long as I am coming from within the EC, I can bring my plants. So I'm going to give it a go.

There shouldn't be a problem, but it isn't an anything goes situation.

There's lots of info and details on Defra's site (specifically http://www.defra.gov.uk/planth/pass.htm, where Plant Passports are discussed).
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

I ended up not taking them, as I was worried for their health and gave them to a friend instead. :(
