Where can I cash a State Tax Refund?

The State of Georgia is finally sending me my 2006 tax refund. Where and how can I cash such a check over here? I bank with Lloyds. Can they do it? And if so, how much are they going to charge me? TIA.

If it's a big cheque, it'll be worth the £50 or so in bank fees Lloyds will charge to cash it.

If it's a small cheque, try having a US relative cash it on your behalf (I don't know if that's legal).

If it contains interest you'd want to be careful not to remit the interest to the UK to avoid having to pay UK tax on the interest portion.

There's no interest involved. I still have a US bank account. If it's going to cost me 50 quid to cash it then I may as well send it back to the States and have a friend deposit it for me in to the US account.

You didn't say you had a bank account back home still.  Never cash a dollar cheque here if you can cash it back home.  The exchange rates you get s*ck big rocks if you cash deposit a foreign currency into your bank, no matter which high street bank it is.  I keep $$ in $$ and ££ in ££, and try never to have to exchange $$ for ££ and ££ for $$ ever.

I usually give the check to someone going back to the US with a deposit slip out of the back of my American check book. In the worse case scenario, I've sent checks to my bank directly with a deposit slip and a little note asking them to deposit it. I don't endorse the back of it though in that case. Sometimes my bank has charged me a buck or two for not endorsing it.

Check to see if your U.S. bank has a bank by mail option. Citibank does -- we went online and found the appropriate address, then we mail checks to them. In a week or so we go online and can see that it has been deposited. Make sure to write your account number and "For deposit only" by your signature on the back. Actually, do that whether you mail it to the bank or to a friend to deposit for you.
