i was discussing this with husband and he mentioned another reason  might be  because a doctor might write something about you that you might not like. for instance saying you seem depressed , or maybe that you are a bit of a handful when you come into the office and etc.

If a doctor thinks you might be depressed, or that you might have a behavioural or emotional problem, isn't it his responsibility to tell you so you can get help for it?

Yes bit nothing alters the fact that the nurse left the file unattended.  That's the bit that worries me.  I remember when I was pregnant & used to go to the ante natal clinic at the hospital, I'd be waiting to speak to the receptionist and a midwife would come along and leave an open file on the counter. It happened 2 or 3 times, anyone standing where I was could read it, and these files had peoples names & addresses and god knows what else on the top page. So it's a bit late to say afterwards that it's confidential information.  It shouldn't be left lying around.

I agree. This is also concerning.
