External Hard Drive through US Airport Security

Can I take my external hard drive through security when I move?  I would rather keep it on my person than subject it to the rough handling it would go through in my checked baggage.  Is it safe from TSA standards?  How about through the X-ray?  I assume that bit would be safe if a laptop can go through.

I cary mine all the time and never had an issue with it.  Same with my laptops.

same here. i've flown with it in my laptop bag twice and never had a problem with it being in there.
