Need a new US bank account
« on: November 09, 2007, 01:07:20 PM »
Since we moved here we've had an account with NetBank, but they went out of business a couple of months ago and the accounts were taken over by ING Direct. They've just sent us an email saying that we have to change the address on our account to a US address or close the account. Whilst we can give my in-law's address, I'm not keen because it's not really fair to expect them to deal with the mail from it and, more importantly, they're highly unreliable in doing so.

So we need a new checking account, mainly for credit card and student loan payments, and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations. The requirements are:
  • Must be willing and able to cope with a foreign address
  • Must be possible to operate (& preferably open) the account entirely online
  • Must have no fees (we don't need bill-pay)
  • Must have no minimum balance requirements

It seems like Everbank may fit the bill. You have to open an account with $1,500 but it seems like there are no minimums after that. Anyone have any experiences of them?

Thanks.

I have an account with Chase.

They don't have any trouble dealing with people in foreign countries. I wire money directly to them from my UK bank accounts using their website without any trouble at all.

(I opened my account with them in person in the US, though. I don't know if you could do it from the UK.)
