Sky remote control
« on: November 27, 2007, 10:32:43 PM »
Sammy has managed to spill a cup of cold tea I'd left out (thought it was out of his reach!) on our Sky remote (or doofer as it's called in our house for some reason!). It now won't work.

Can you buy cheapy replacements? Will Sky charge us for it when we cancel (move to the US)?

TIA
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

If you remove the batteries, open up the unit, mop up the obvious damp and then leave it in the warm to dry out thoroughly, you may find that it will work again.  Unfortunately, if the tea has gotten into the contacts under the buttons it can take rather more delicate disassembly and reassembly to bring the unit back to life.

Anyway, replacements are easily obtainable from many different sources:

Local second-hand shops which deal with audio/video equipment usually have some, and if you have any Ca$h Converter type places nearby they'll often have some common remote controls in stock (and the basic Sky remote unit is very common).

Too bad your little accident didn't happen last weekend. We gave one away on freecycle on Sunday.
Put up a 'wanted' on freecycle. We've given three away this year. People always have them lying around.

Thanks everyone!

Paul, we tried to dry it out a bit, but we didn't have a small enough screw driver to open it properly.
