Did anybody else watch this on the BBC last Sunday night?  Very good stuff!  I'm not usually much into period pieces like that, but my wife wanted to watch it and I was hooked within minutes.  :)

I loved it!  Really entertaining, lighthearted Sunday night viewing. Imelda stole every scene she was in...

My only qualm is that there doesn't seem to be a big lovestory involved... afraid that's got to be a major consideration for my enjoyment  ;)

Hmm... I don't know.  I think that may still be to come.  There were more than a couple of hints relative to the young doctor.  I've not read any of the source material, though, so I really have no idea.  :)

Yeah, but he's about 12!  I need middleaged ROMANCE!!!!!  :P To be honest, anything after North & South is going to be a struggle....

But I love it from the opinion that it gives a lot of well respected, older actresses a chance to shine.

I enjoyed it. About 5 minutes in my husband asked if I was getting into it, and I said let's give it 5 more minutes and then we'll give up. But we didn't give up; we both enjoyed it. Which was a surprise, as I didn't know how a show of this type would appeal to my hubby (there was nothing geared towards learning or history, and nothing blew up, and likes to have at least one of those in a show). We'll be sure to catch it next week!

I loved it too and you have a treat in store,  Mrs Gaskell is surprisingly easy to read!

I have been looking forward to seeing Cranford for months.  Years ago I "discovered" Mrs. Gaskell and read everything by her that I could find.  Cranford was my favorite, a little gem full of human interest.  Not much plot maybe, but such human characters treated with both ironic humor and affection that I thought the whole effect had greater warmth than Jane Austen, who always seemed to me had such high standards that her characters never had a chance to live up to them.  So I am very happy to see Gaskell's work, especially Cranford, getting this attention.  I really enjoyed the first episode and hope the others live up to its promise.  My husband liked it too, and he generally demands a lot of plot and movement to hold his interest.  Who do you think will win the doctor?  Which is your favorite sister?  It's been so long since I read the original, i don't remember how it turns out, which is probably just as well.
