Blood Donation then Long Haul Flight
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:56:46 PM »
The local blood collection is coming the day before I leave for the US. I know it is not ideal, but does any one know what the risks would be, if any?

I will have a chat with the professionals but just curious if any of you knew.

Don't do it!!!!

Extremes of pressure or altitude (or depth) after blood donation are a bad idea.  You have less haemoglobin, so less ability to transfer oxygen to your organs, so being in a low oxygen environment, ie altitude, could leady hypoxia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoxia

If you are back after Christmas, this is when blood levels are at their lowest, so you will be doing the best thing by waiting until you get back.

Not to mention you have just been to India and thus I don't believe you are eligible to give blood, young lady!

Depends where you have been.

Nice hotels in Mumbai, you're fine.

Working in a hospice in Kolkota...no.

The blood donation organization (sorry don't know the name of it here!) won't take your blood though, if you've been there recently (anywhere in India, not just dodgy areas).  My coworker tried and they politely said sorry, no.

they keep changing the rules re: india, china, etc and giving blood.  sometimes it's 4 months back, sometimes 6 months.  also sometimes depends on where you've gone.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

They must have changed it.  I was in India in 2000 - 2001 and I donated on my return, they just wanted to know if I had been in any malarial areas.

But yes, these things change on a monthly basis.  Best not risk it, or ask.
