Barcelona bound
« on: December 15, 2007, 10:13:19 PM »
I know there are a few older threads about visiting Barcelona, but was wondering if anyone has been there recently?  We are looking for a long weekend break around the end of January, and a bit on the lower budget end, such as a clean hotel, centrally located, but not a pricey four star place.  Also best cheap flights?  We're in Glasgow, so I know that won't be quite as handy as London.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Not too sure on hotels as we stopped further out when on hols. Just looked up on www and found this:

The prices seem reasonable and I think the flights are included. It's a lovely city with Las Ramblas, the Olympic Stadium etc. Musical coloured fountains. Great time!

We're flying to Barcelona this Saturday and staying at Hotel Alimara which I booked through Hotels.com for 55 euros each night.  The reviews on Trip Advisor say it's close to a metro stop and a short ride to the city centre.  I can definitely tell you more when we return on 2 January.

the metro helps a lot! i went recently to Barcelona from Glasgow-Prestwick on Ryanair. We travelled to Reus which was like an hour and a half bus ride to the centre of Barcelona, but I think that Girona Airport is a bit closer, ryanair.com's website would have more info. That's probably one of the cheapest ways, though the bus ride was like 18 Euros or something. Flyglobespan has a direct flight from Glasgow Int'l to Barcelona's main airport for £42.99 each way. Ryanair is cheap if you can get a sale (we got our tickets for £17.89 each way) but keep in mind there's the fee for the bus too and that can be a bit annoying. Never taken Flyglobespan, but that is an option. I stayed at a hostel and ate at McDonald's so I'm definately not the best person to ask where to stay or eat, I was really on a budget! But I had a GREAT time, the city was fab, the bus tour was lengthy (take it over two days!) and I loved Las Ramblas, the Olympic stadium, Nucamp, etc. Have fun! Plus the temperature is a bit warmer than Glasgow, always a plus in the winter :)
