suggestions needed for alcohol-free trifle
« on: December 17, 2007, 07:03:01 PM »
Here's my dilemma.  DH and I are spending Christmas in Leeds with his family and I've been drafted to make dessert.  For religious reasons, dear MIL won't touch alcohol but my all-time fave holiday dessert is chocolate kahlua trifle.  Can anyone suggest an alternative ingredient?  I was thinking maybe some chilled espresso, but that might be too bitter.  I know I'm being stubborn but this dish really reminds me of home so I want to share it with my new UK family...

Here's the recipe:
Sliced madiera cake drizzled in Kahlua
Top with chocolate mousse
Add a layer of chopped walnuts
Top with freshly whipped cream
Sprinkle with toffee bits
...and then repeat the layers

Thanks for any and all advice.

How about those flavoured syrups you get in coffee shops?

Vicky, I considered that--hazlenut would be nice, I think--but those contain alcohol as well.  Of course, I could be REALLY cheeky and not tell her.  I made her banana bread this summer and the vanilla flavouring I used most likely contained alcohol.  Ignorance is bliss?

I think the syrup idea is a good one. She won't taste any alcohol, so will be none the wiser. Go for it.

Doesn't she ever use vanilla when she bakes at home??

Ignorance is bliss???

Hmmm.

I know that I would flip if my mum made her trifle with gelatine-jelly instead of veggie jelly, as she has threatened to do several times.

While I am sure you are joking........don't do it!!!!

There's got to be something else.....

How do you know she hasn't?  ;)

I think that would be unfair.

What if you just left it out? I make sherry trifle all the time without any sherry! You could maybe use coffee essence if you want to get a similar flavour.

Because I'm the one who goes and gets the veggie jelly for her.

I found this http://www.sainsburys.com/groceries/frameset/navigation_frame.jsp at Sainsbury's.

Britwife, you're right.  I would feel too guilty to enjoy myself.
pkmac, thanks for the link...it looks promising.

ETA: chocolate extract and instant coffee sounds like our winner.  Thank you for all your comments!
