london day out - using the river more

I thought i might post this.

I'm meeting someone in London tomorrow so am doing the sunday jazz cruise (scroll down to page 36/37) which is always good. Some of you might find some other options of interest for a day out in London - I always think the river is so under-used. Another good trip is boat from Embankment to Greenwich (look round the park, market then pub lunch) and then back on the DLR. With the warehouse conversions along the river and the train back thru Canary Wharf it makes a good alternative to see a different London.

That's well worth the time, as it's surprising just how many famous London landmarks and other historical places of interest you can see along the way (you even go past Traitors Gate, where many prisoners entered the Tower of London!).

For anyone with nautical interests, the Cutty Sark and the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich are also a good way to while away a couple of hours.

Heehee, it's not underused by me, I live on it! (my boyfriend and I bought a 103 foot, 75 year old Dutch barge that used to be a hotel last year and we're living on it right by Tower Bridge).

All the boats that go past are like our neighbours - some great (like the little Hollywood, or Edwardian, or Bateau or even the "big boned" City Cruisers), but others are naff and noisy (neon wonderland Erasmus, or the Dixie Queen and its tacky horn) but one company in particular are downright evil and very very dangerous drivers (that'd be Thames Clippers, who disregard slow down areas on the charts, and whose wakes have seriously injured one woman and have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage on just our mooring alone, despite huge protests by river dwellers all up and down the Thames and even action from the PLA). It was nice seeing all the big fireworks on New Years Eve and watching all the party boats do donuts by Tower Bridge at midnight. :)

If I had to pick one commercial cruise to go on, I think it'd be a Bateau dinner cruise. The boat is long and low with huge windows the whole way and they go slowly enough that you'd see everything, and it just looks really lovely inside...

We went to the Take That concert at the O2 on NYE and got off the tube at Canary Wharf thinking we would stroll the rest of the way. Big mistake. We ended up getting lost in Isle of Dogs and Tower Hamlets and I refused to walk any more. Fortunately I noticed a little pier by the river. We managed to catch the Thames Clipper to the O2, which was just a short sail away. It felt rather grand to arrive someplace on a boat. I would definitely use the Clipper again, it was good fun, after the IA of getting lost!
Good things come to those who wait...a really long time.

Very jealous...even in this weather :)

If you take southwest trains (and maybe others I don't know) you can get half price on many london attractions... a river boat ride being one of them :) check it out.
