Turning in my passport for my license
« on: January 13, 2008, 12:36:16 PM »
I know you need to send the passport in, does it need to be the one with my visa in it?  I have my expired passport here, can I use that instead?

Thanks

It needs to be a valid passport. If it's expired, it's not valid....

The one with your visa in it since it gives you right to be here.

I had mine back within a week this time last year and since then I even passed my test.

USCs worry too much. Just send it as securely as you can. I was actually surprised it came as fast as it did.

I know it sounds scary to put your passport in the post. I posted about this over the summer, and got some good advice.

1. Get a prepaid special delivery envelope from the post office (I think that's the name--they are silver, and cost approx. 5 quid)
2. Go to the nearest DVLA office and have them check over the documents and send them from their office. They will include the envelope with their package.

I did this back in August, and had my passport and provisional back in just over a week. Just to let you know, they come separately, so don't be concerned. I got my provisional back first, and then the passport the next day.

I got my passport first and the next day the provisional.

I don't mean to minimize the suck factor if it gets lost, but that is just the risk if you want to get your license. But there are ways to minimize that risk as kate_mate said.

Just to be clear--they will send your passport back to you in the self-addressed special delivery envelope if you include one. That way you will have to sign for it.

Thanks for the tips.  I had my passport stolen in Italy back in 97 it wasn't that big a deal, but I am sure things are harder now with all the post 9/11 security.

Also, the DVLA allows you to address the special delivery envelope with your work address if you wish.  In my case it took about 8 days. (The licence itself arrived at my home address 2 days later after that, by second class mail.)
