good neigborhoods in West London?
« on: February 23, 2004, 03:45:33 PM »
I'm looking for a one-bedroom in West London. My husband will be working in Ealing and I'll be looking for work in that general area once I arrive. Can anyone recommend a nice, safe but not over-the-top expensive neighborhood within an easy commute? I hear Shepherd's Bush is good. Any advice is appreciated because I don't know the area at all and don't have the opportunity to visit until mid-march.

Only in dying, life;

Anything inside London will be very expensive, even a 1 bedroom,, but if you go a bit out of London, to Chertsey maybe, it's a bit more 'villiage like' but you may find it to be less hectic and less expensive. Still close enough for a fast commute into London on the Train too. There are surely lots of people around here who can offer better suggestions tho :)

Ealing is OK, Shep Bush is ok these days too but had a repuataion in the past for being ab it rough ... if you're looking for someone where a bit more leafy and genteel try Chiswick - it's close to Ealing and near the river. Have a look at www.findaproperty.com for rental prices and info about different areas to give yourself an idea.

our friends live in hanwell, it seemed nice enough.

We're looking to live in West London as well, so this thread is interesting to me.  :)

We lived in Chiswick which is not far from Ealing by Tube.  It was a nice neighbourhood, but very pricey.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

Hi.  I have worked in West London for years.  West london is really a mix of things, so it depends on what you are looking for and what "good" means to you.

Ealing and Ealing Common are lovely, leafy and quite middle class as is Chiswick and parts of Isleworth.  However, Ealing and Chiswick are very expensive, but have great shopping, restaurants and night life.  Isleworth is not as expensive, but doesn't have as good of transport links or all of the amenities.

If you are looking more for multi-ethnic environments--Hounslow is very diverse and has decent transport links.  It is not as expensive. Shepards Bush and Acton are also very diverse and have decent amenities, but as was mentioned above, have had problems with crime in the past, but loads of work is going on to stop it. Southall is an amazing place--a different world.  Very diverse with loads of Punjabi shops and restaurants and is very lively.

If you happen to be a neo-nazi or white supremacist, then feltham could be the place for you as it has a burgeoning BNP party.  However, it is undergoing massive redevelopment in its town centre and is the focus of work to develop better relationships between the disenfranchised white communities and other ethnic groups. Housing isn't expensive and the transport links are good because of its proximity to Heathrow.

South West London is great as well--I have lived in Richmond and Putney and love Kew and Kingston.  It wouldn't be too hard to get to ealing from Richmond, but it is expensive.

You could also look further west outside of London-- various trains to the west stop in Ealing Broadway.  We are moving to Windsor and Ealing is about 15 minutes away by train.

Good Luck

Having just checked out some of the neighborhoods in West London for ourselves this weekend, i have to say we've chosen Chiswick.  It's exactly what i've wanted......beautiful, the housing is lovely ($$, but worth it to me) and the town area is filled with great shops!   ;D
