EMA: Education Maintainance Allowance, 16 yr olds
« on: April 28, 2004, 12:23:48 PM »
I saw an advert on the telly yesterday, for this allowance, and went to their website.

http://www.dfes.gov.uk/financialhelp/ema/

It appears to be a financial incentive for 16 year olds to carry on in school, for those with families that make less than £30,000, paying £10-£30 a week to the student (dependant on income), starting from Sept 2004, with bonuses of £100 for continuing.

Who's eligible: UK nationals, those with Indefinite Leave to Remain, and some qualify from EEA/EU countries.

Visit the site for details and info pack. :)

Is that Indefinite Leave to Remain, Leah?

No prob - it's just that we're trying to keep all info about this away from the older boy as he's not eligible for it.   :-\\\\

That's a shame, why not? No ILR yet?

Nope - they changed FLR to 2 years just 17 days before we applied...if we'd have known, we'd have gotten in there right after the wedding.  It changed on 1st April 2003 and we were married on 21st March.  Argh!  >:(  But since even the Home Office's own website didn't have the info...so we sit in "Leave to Remain Limbo" for another year.  :-\\\\

If I were you, I'd try applying for the EMA anyway, include a explanatory note, see what happens. Can't hurt, and he doesn't have to know that you tried.
