Suggestions in Suffolk
« on: January 17, 2008, 11:46:48 AM »
My dad & step-mom are visiting me this summer and then heading on to Suffolk...a town that has the same name as our last name is located there...but they have no idea what else to do/where to go in Suffolk as they'd like to stay for a few days.  Does anyone have any suggestions for places to stay, things to do, sights to see?  Thanks!

The house in the Clouds is a pretty cool site to see, but you can't go in and have a tour unless you want to part with £15.  The Bury St Edmunds Cathedral is really neat, as is Bury St Edmunds the town.  Snape Malting is a concert hall and has lots of stuff to do there nature walks, little boat tours, shopping. Ipswich is a good place to do some shopping. Framlingham Castle has a great tour going, and Shawsgate Vineyard is just down the road there you can tour the vineyard and then do some tasting in the shop.  Great Yarmouth (although this might be more North Norfolk area) is like small seaside boardwalk town sort of like Ocean City Md or Atlantic City, plenty to do there. That is all I can think of at the moment.

Why not look into hiring a narrowboat or cruiser and spend a few days pub hopping along the Norfolk Broads?

Easy! Suffolk is just gorgous and you can easily spend a whole holiday there. There's wonderful coastline but beautiful countryside and villages too.

Framlingham for the castle and town, Bury St Edmunds and Ickworth House just outside it, pop over into Cambridge; visit Lavenham and Clare for real chocolate-box villages; a day at the seaside at Southwold, walk along the pier, drink beer from the brewery, and do the round walk along the beach to Walberswick and back through the dunes and bird sanctuary; more seaside at Aldeburgh, where you can walk up the beach to the mock Elizabethan village and have tea at the village pond; maybe rent bikes and go cycling...

Southwold and Aldeburgh - beautiful!  Highly recommended.  Both on the coast.  Both very quaint, high end shops and cafes, but the beach and walks are all free!

Gt. Yarmouth is Norfolk, but it's south Norfolk.  The county line with Suffolk is only a few miles to the south.   There are a few pics of Gt. Yarmouth in my UK-Y gallery.
