temporary insurance for visitors?
« on: January 31, 2008, 06:30:40 PM »
hey a wee question here:

my mum is coming to visit for 2 weeks in March from the USA and was wondering if it was possible if I could insure her on my car for those two weeks. Does anyone know of any companies? she wants to drive it around while I'm at uni, etc and saves us renting a car...any ideas?!

Just phone your insurance provider and have them add her on for the period of time you want. I did this a year or so ago. No problem at all.

Assuming that you don't already have a policy for "any driver" that is.

So the car has no insurance at the moment?

That's correct, the car currently has no insurance and has been sitting in the driveway for the past 4 months (but it is taxed, MOT'd, etc. The person who gave me the car was really nice to do that!). I thought about insuring it for my provisional licence, but don't know if that would make it easier to insure a visitor, etc or if it would be really expensive.

Basically I was wondering if there is a site that sells online temporary insurance. In the USA it's easy to get but haven't found any for the UK :(

There's no need for it to be taxed to sit in your driveway.  You could have sent the tax disk in for a refund for each complete month it's not been used on the road.

lol i know, i actually just found that out 2 months ago, but i've been trying to pass the road test here and drive the car, i've taken the road test twice and failed for stalling the car twice in a row :( and again in 3 weeks im taking it again so that's why I haven't had the disc removed, I figure I'd use the car soon but it hasn't happened and now I see I could have got at least £60 back! Thanks for the advice though, I hope other ppl realise that too!!

So looking on the internet the only company that keeps coming up doesn't insure USA/Canadian/Australia licences...so anyone else have any recommendations? If not I think we might just hire a car for her lol.

Hiya!

I've never had to do this so I'm not so sure, but I 'think' I heard one time of something like this being provided by 'Budget' Insurance. Look them up and see if it's what you want.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

For anyone who hasn't done this before, you just need to pick up a V14 form from the Post Office, then mail it back to DVLA with the tax disk.  You can get a refund only for complete calendar months left to run.

The V14 can also be downloaded here:
